Chapter 12

The mass of muscle and viscera tore through the remains of an old building, showering us in dust and debris, but I didn’t care.

I could still feel the blood pumping in my ears, like the drums of war sounding in my head with every beat of my heart. With each bit of shrapnel that hit me, the drums grew louder and louder, until finally I charged the Corpse Ripper. I ducked low under the first razor sharp claw it sent after me, dodging the attack with ease, and sank my fist deep into the monster’s flesh.

Blood sprayed from the wound I’d made in the Rippers’ side, but the beast was far from done. It swiped another of its many paws at me, this one leaving a jagged tear along my ribcage.

I didn’t look down at the wound, but in the back of my mind I knew that without my enhanced body, that attack would have killed me. The claws had cut me right down to my rib bones, only stopping there because they couldn’t quite cut through my toughened up bones.

“Luke, what the hell are you doing, man?” Jules cried, summoning up more wind to aid me.

“He’s an idiot. Leave him.” Maron called. She sounded further away. Not that I cared.

I dodged yet another swipe from the beast, but this time, I was ready for the attack. I grabbed the Ripper by its arm and pulled, lifting the huge beast into the air with my enhanced strength and its own momentum. From there gravity helped me slam the creature into the remains of the asphalt on the ground, creating a small crater in the dirt that kicked dust away from where it impacted with such force.

“Are you sure he’s a tank?!” Jules asked in disbelief and sent a blade of wind that cut into the Ripper’s side while it was down.

“Does it matter if he’s going to- holy shit, look at his ribs.”

I could feel the itching of my skin slowly knitting itself back together as I fought. The wound still hurt, but all that did was fuel my rage even more.

Strength exceeding the bounds of a Copper Rank 1 Body may result in damage.

I scoffed at the message and stalked towards the Ripper. It was trying to get back to its feet, blood pouring from its maw. I didn’t let it. I struck out with a foot, and felt the Rippers knee shatter under my kick. I kicked again, pulverizing the rest of its leg bone. It tried a weak swipe at me with one of its paws, but I caught it and twisted, breaking more bones.

As the muscles in my arms flexed to twist the powerful beast’s arm, I felt my skin and muscle tear, and pain like nothing I’d experienced flared around the joints of my arm, but that only severed to make me even angrier, which only made me stronger. Like I’d done to the ape before it, I began punching the once bear, rapidly with everything I had, slowly driving the beast’s skull into the dirt.
